Schoenherr Attorneys at Law: Schoenherr expands its EU presence with a fully-fledged Brussels office

  • 26.02.2014

Schoenherr, a leading corporate law firm in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), expands its EU and Competition practice with a reinforced and newly-staffed office in Brussels. Volker Weiss, a partner in Schoenherr’s competition practice, will head the Belgium office.Volker Weiss has relocated from Vienna to Brussels, where he leads a team of EU & Competition law specialists from Schoenherr’s CEE offices.

Schoenherr has been present with a representative office in Brussels since late 1994, coinciding with Austria’s accession to the EU. Its move to now launch a fully-fledged Brussels office reflects the considerable growth of the firm in the CEE region and the growing importance of EU law and Competition law matters to the firm’s clients situated there.

“Schoenherr has 14 offices and more than 300 lawyers providing a full range of legal services, including many with a distinct EU angle. Reinforcing our presence in Brussels is a logical step. We aim to be the top choice for companies from our home region in Central and Eastern Europe seeking EU law-related assistance,” says Schoenherr Managing Partner Christoph Lindinger.

“We want to bring CEE closer to Brussels – and Brussels closer to CEE,” adds Volker Weiss. “We see a lot of market potential in advising companies in those countries which have recently acceded to the EU or are set to do so. Our clients will benefit from our presence in Brussels. This is a move planned and achieved together with the colleagues of our competition practice group in CEE. To this end, we are integrating members from our CEE-based EU & Competition teams, some of whom will also relocate to Brussels.”

Schoenherr’s Brussels office will focus on EU law & Competition law, offering advice on matters with CEE-impact. This includes EU and multijurisdictional merger control filings, cartel cases, state aid and competition compliance, but also regulatory related advice (e.g. in the field of energy).

Schoenherr’s EU & Competition practice is widely recognized as a top tier practice and advises clients from across all industries in merger control, anti-trust and state aid matters on the European and national level throughout the firm’s comprehensive network in CEE.
