BackgroundCorporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept which encourages organizations to consider the interests of society by taking responsibility for the impact of the organization|s activities on customers, employees, shareholders, communities, and the environment in all aspects of its operations. This commitment extends beyond the statutory obligation to comply with legislation and sees organizations voluntarily taking further steps to improve the quality of life for employees and their families as well as for the local community and society at large. According to a study on CSR in Moldova, CSR practices are common among multinational companies, and to a smaller degree, local companies. CSR practices and reporting in Moldova is at an early stage and limited to several sectors. With UNDP-Moldova support, a local Global Compact Network was established in Moldova in 2006 and included 16 companies (Moldcell, Union Fenosa, Milestii Mici, Endava, SunCommunications, Vitanta, Bioprotect, Tatrabis, Rompetrol, Acorex-Wine, Covoare-Ungheni, Orange, Arhiconi-Grup, Moldova-Agroindbank, Millenium Group, Global Phoning Company).
