Mobile operator Moldcell comes with a new premiere for the Republic of Moldova!

On May 26th 2010, at the Technical University of Moldova, the Faculty of Radio-electronics and Telecommunications, the first laboratory of mobile communications for students in the Republic of Moldova was inaugurated. The Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Mr. Flad Filat, the Rector of the Technical University, Mr. Ion Bostan and the General Manager of Moldcell, Mr. Chiril Gaburici participated in the event.

The opening of the laboratory of mobile communications, founded by Moldcell Company, is a premiere for Moldova and a unique experience for the neighboring countries inclusively.

This launching is in line with Moldcell strategy of activity aimed at supporting economic growth in the country and the development of a harmonious knowledge – based society. This is the strategy of the entire TeliaSonera group that operates in 20 countries of the world, including the Republic of Moldova.

Chiril Gaburici, the General Manager of Moldcell: “Moldcell carries out a series of initiatives aimed at supporting the educated youth on their way to professional formation. We know very well about aspirations of the graduates and we are also aware of the difficulties they face at the beginning of the careers. The company uses these initiatives to offer assistance in education of the new generation of specialists and contributes to the minimization of emigration of young specialists. Our main shareholder – TeliaSonera – is one of the inventors of mobile telephony. Recently, TeliaSonera was the first operator in the world to launch commercially the 4G technology in Sweden and Norway and it already has the license for Finland and Denmark. We are glad to share this experience to Moldova. Maybe the students who will attend the practical classes in our Laboratory will achieve performances as high as the ones of the specialists from the Nordic countries.”

The laboratory is situated in the premises of the Faculty of Radio Electronics and Telecommunications, its capacity is 12 seats and it has the latest equipment successfully used in many countries of Europe. This premiere consists of an autonomous testing switch center that has all functions of a GSM network. Thanks to this center, the students will have a possibility to study the structure, functionality, operating and administration of a GSM network.

On the level of practice, depending on the applications and programs, the students will have a possibility to study three basic GSM elements:
1. BSC - Base Station Controller – this component allows to connect mobile phones to the mobile station;
2. MSC/VLR - Mobile Switching Center/ Visitor Location Register – this is the component of a GSM network that manages talks in the network and assures interconnectivity with other mobile and fixed telephone networks;
3. HLR - Home Location Register – data base where all data about the users of mobile phones are stored.

Thus, the students will benefit from a unique experience – they will apply theory, they learnt during classes, to practice during their laboratory works.

Rodica Verbeniuc, Corporate Communications Unit Head: “We believe that this laboratory will play a significant role in the educational process of the Technical University of Moldova. Besides modern equipment, the Laboratory of Mobile Communications will also have a specialized library. As part of the Swedish – Finnish telecommunications group TeliaSonera, Moldcell benefits of international experience and knowledge transfer. These are things that Moldcell wants to offer to young people of Moldova. Education is on the agenda of our priorities, because Moldcell aims to contribute to the creation of a world with better opportunities.”

Besides the fact that Moldcell is a leader in implementing new technologies in Moldova, the operator has also been actively promoting during 10 years of its activity corporate social responsibility, giving special importance to the social cultural development of the society in an effort to facilitate the transition of Moldova to a knowledge – based society. The operator implemented a number of long-term projects aimed at supporting the youth and preparing them for a successful future.
